When my son showed up to his first day of Kindergarten, he told his entire class that he was Iron Man. “For real, ” he said. Whenever he was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he would respond, “A super hero, of course. I’m Iron Man.”
I loved his teacher. She told him that he could be whatever he wanted. She also said that it was refreshing to have a child in class who still knew how to “act like a kid.” These days, it seems children are so over scheduled, which pulls them away from good, old-fashioned playtime. They don’t get to use their imaginations.
In addition to playtime, books offer a way to keep kids’ imaginations engaged, encouraging them to think outside the box. So I recently asked a teacher for her top book picks for Kindergarteners. Here they are. Enjoy!
1) Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
2) Corduroy
3) Dooby Dooby Moo
4) Green Eggs and Ham
5) Harold and the Purple Crayon
6) If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
7) Stone Soup
8) Sylvester and the Magic Pebble
9) The Snowy Day
10) Where the Wild Things Are
