In 2011 Veronkia Scott, a student at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, was given an assignment to design something to fill actual needs. So she designed an innovative sleeping bag coat for the homeless. She then turned her school project into a fully viable nonprofit business model.
Veronika is now the founder and CEO of The Empowerment Plan, which employs and trains homeless women to manufacture the sleeping bag coats. The coats are then distributed back to the homeless within the Detroit community and across the nation, at no cost to them.
The Empowerment Plan currently employs 13 women as full-time seamstresses who, through training and steady employment, are able to lift themselves from the cycle of poverty.
